”The quiet hero” - part 2

Former Sergeant Brian Stooke was one of seven police officers shot by gunman, Mad Max in June 1985. In part two of his interview on The Crime Couch, he talks about the 8 month man-hunt and what happened to the dangerous criminal.

Brian became a paraplegic after being shot four times and discusses how important getting back to work was for his recovery. He talks about life after policing and how vital the support from his family, colleagues and friends was for his rehabilitation.

Former Sergeant Brian Stooke is a hero and a survivor. He is one of seven police officers shot by "Mad Max" or Pavel Marinoff in June, 1985. 

Brian was shot four times, one bullet severing his spine making him  a paraplegic. But he returned to work and was awarded the Victoria Police Star for his action on duty. He's a remarkable man and continued to make a difference in the job he loves, despite his injury.

Brian's encounter with Mad Max sparked one of Victoria's biggest man-hunts ever. He remembers that night he was shot on The Crime Couch.

”A burning ambition”

Former Detective Senior Sergeant Phillip Hubbard is an arson expert. He's a fire and bomb scene investigator and talks about one unusual job that stuck with him and his colleague, Detective Senior Constable John Robertson. 

It happened on New Year's Day in 1995 involving an explosion of a grocery store. The store owner actually turned up at the local police station .... still smouldering! He was later arrested and charged with criminal damage by fire, arson and attempting to obtain property by deception. He was convicted and given a three year, six month jail sentence.

”A day in the life of a motorcycle traffic cop”

One of Geoff Tulloch's initial Victoria Police roles was at the Mobile Traffic Section. When stationed in Bairnsdale, he was the only motorcycle traffic cop in Gippsland. Geoff proudly rode an Ariel Square Four motorcycle which ended up in the Victoria Police Museum! 

Known for his meticulous record-keeping and courtesy, Geoff was also in the Second-Hand Dealers Squad, Crime Cars and was a law instructor at the Academy before retiring as a Superintendent.

Vikki Petraitis is a true crime author with seventeen titles under her belt. She often writes the stories of people who haven't a voice; including former Victoria Police detective Paul Dale, murdered Phillip Island woman Beth Barnard and child abuse survivor Rod Braybon.

Former Chief Superintendent Bill Jackson (registered number 12372) talks to his daughter on The Crime Couch. The top cop reflects on his 40 years in the job and dealing with retirement. 

Bill was awarded a prestigious APM and worked in the Mobile Traffic Section, the Second Hand Dealers and Drug Squads; but the highlight of his career was nabbing an employee who was stealing rare and precious coins from the National Gallery of Victoria.

”What really happened to Elly Warren?”

Twenty year old Elly Warren was an aspiring marine biologist, volunteering on a marine conservation project in Tofo, Mozambique during November 2016. She, like so many young adventurers had been drawn to the coastal town known for its coral reefs, mantra rays and humpback whales.

But after her lifeless body was found face down in the sand behind a toilet block in the area, her father Paul has been relentless in his pursuit for justice for his daughter; who he believes was murdered. His five year investigation has led to a Victorian Coronial inquest scheduled for later this year.

Former Detective Senior Constable Kaye Murphy is a trail-blazer. She paved the way for women in the job as the first single Mum and the youngest female CIB detective in Victoria Police.  

She also worked in the toughest Crime Squads; the Breakers, Armed Robbery and Consorting Squads and the Homicide Squad.

Preventing crime against women and children is something former Detective Inspector Glenn Davies is passionate about. After 30 years in the job at the Armed Robbery Squad, the Embona Taskforce and heading up the Sex Crimes Squad; Glenn worked extensively in government, on boards and parliamentary inquiries giving policy advice and supporting victims of clergy sexual abuse. He's also worked across the Asia Pacific educating police from PNG, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

Giovanna Campana led the way for women in Victoria Police. She was the first female to be stationed in General Duties at Ballarat. Giovanna was also the first female Sergeant Police Negotiator and in the highly regarded Protective Security Group. She also notched up another career achievement as the first female Sergeant posted to East Timor.
