It's a time for remembering fallen Victoria Police members; including former Sergeant Ron Fenton who passed away Tuesday 13 April, 2021. Ron was an extraordinary man and police officer. I had the privilege of speaking to Ron in his last few weeks. I was struck by his courage, amazing resilience and determination to still make a difference despite the fact that he was dying. Rest In Peace dear Ron Fenton.

”Henderson is the name”

Detective Senior Constable Reginald Ernest Henderson was an extraordinary police officer. In a career spanning 38 years, Reg apprehended more than 3,000 offenders, identifying many only by photographs he kept in a little notebook.  He was known as "the Falcon of The Force", "Eagle Eye Henderson" and "the Detective with the photographic memory". 

Reg was more of a diplomat than a detective; well-groomed, quiet, didn't drink or smoke and acted as close personal security for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11, the Queen Mother, Prince Phillip, Princess Alexandra and the USA President Lyndon B. Johnson. 

Former Victoria Police Sergeant Newton C Reynolds worked with Reg Henderson as a cadet. After leaving the job, Newton decided to write a book;"Henderson is the name" as a tribute to a man he deeply admires.

The Hoddle Street massacre is seared into the mind of former Superintendent Graham "Squirty" Kent. In this second part of The Crime Couch, Squirty Kent remembers interviewing killer Julian Knight and taking him back to the scene of the crime for re-enactments. He reflects on the trauma still felt by police members who attended the scene and survivors of the community who happened to be in Hoddle Street that night.

Former Superintendent Graham "Squirty" Kent has earned his stripes as an experienced investigator. He was a detective in the Armed Robbery Squad. Homicide Squad, Transit and Ethical Standards before doing a stint in the Police Association and finishing his career as a Superintendent. 

On the 9th of August 1987, Squirty Kent was called out to a job that would change him forever. Ex-Army cadet Julian Knight opened fire on innocent people murdering seven people and injuring another 21. The Hoddle Street massacre was a horrendous event that changed our lives forever. To this day, Squirty Kent to this refuses to use the offender's name.

”An Officer and a gentleman”

Former Chief Superintendent Bill Jackson (registered number 12372) talks to his daughter on The Crime Couch. He speaks about what policing was like in Melbourne during the 1950's-60's.

The top cop was awarded a prestigious APM and spent 40 years in the job. Bill was in the Mobile Traffic Section, Second-Hand Dealers Squad and a Detective in several inner-city CIB's, before being promoted to Superintendent in Nunawading and running "E" district as Chief Superintendent.

”The Cop with a PhD in survival”

Ron Fenton is dying. The former Victoria Police Sergeant has been diagnosed with terminal cancer but is at peace with what he faces. Ron has had a a PhD in survival; he's been shot in the head, broken 37 bones in a motorbike accident, tried to take his own life five times and been diagnosed twice with terminal cancer.

His life changed forever on November 21, 1984 when Ron and his partner Senior Constable Paul Gilbert confronted a gunman armed with a semi-automatic rifle and 200 rounds.  

Ron attributes his survival to a very special brown labrador, a trauma assistance dog called Yogi. The dog is from Defence Community Dogs (DCD) a program that involves prison inmates training rescue dogs.

The final of a two-part podcast series about the true story of Ann-Marie Presland, who fell in love with "Aussie Bob" Trimbole, who in the 1980's became Australia's most wanted man. He was accused of being a crime tsar and the all-powerful head of a mafia family allegedly dealing in drugs, fraud, tax evasion and murder. Ann-Marie talks about being on the run, living in Hong Kong, Ireland and Spain. She lived in fear and in exile with the man she loved as he was arrested in Ireland and chased by the media until he's driven inexorably to his death. Ann-Marie Presland has led an extraordinary life. She was the former partner of "Aussie Bob" Trimbole; one of Australia's most wanted men during the 1980's. Bob Trimbole was accused of being a crime boss; and an all-powerful head of a mafia family dealing in drugs, tax evasion and murder. But Ann-Marie denies that Bob was a criminal and ever involved in criminal activity. She went on the run with Bob and lived overseas in exile and in fear with the man she loved. Her and Bob's love story is no ordinary tale. Ann-Marie not only stood by Bob until his untimely death in Spain in 1987, but has remained staunch ever since. "The one that got away"

Adrian Donehue is a former Homicide detective with 31 years under his belt. He headed up the Major Crime Squad and retired as a Detective Superintendent. But one case has stayed with him. It's a 50 year old cold case that still remains open. The Homicide detective describes it as "one of the worst crimes I'd ever had to deal with". It involves the brutal murders of a pregnant woman and her three children. A 1971 coronial inquest found husband and father Elmer Crawford to be the killer. Elmer Crawford was an unqualified electrician and today would more than 90 years old if he was alive. He has never been located and did a runner after the horrific crimes.

"The prison guard with a heart"

As a prison guard Rick Kaliszewski spent more than three decades in Victoria's toughest prisons dealing with the hardest crooks and villains. He had his life threatened and survived riots in Pentridge. Rick worked in the Canine Units and later became a prison supervisor. He tells an amazing story of chasing gangland crook Lewis Caine with a loaded gun through the streets of Melbourne after Caine had done a runner from the Supreme Court. After threatening to shoot him, Rick ended up forming an unlikely alliance with the underworld figure.
