”The Detective with the photographic memory”

Detective Senior Constable Reginald Ernest Henderson was an extraordinary police officer. In a career spanning 38 years, Reg apprehended more than 3,000 offenders, identifying many only by photographs he kept in a little notebook.  He was also known as "the Falcon of The Force" and "Eagle Eye Henderson". 

Reg was more of a diplomat than a detective; well-groomed, quiet, didn't drink or smoke and acted as close personal security for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11, the Queen Mother, Prince Phillip, Princess Alexandra and the USA President Lyndon B. Johnson. 

Former Victoria Police Sergeant Newton C Reynolds worked with Reg Henderson as a cadet. After leaving the job, Newton decided to write a book;"Henderson is the name" as a tribute to a man he deeply admires.

Former Detective Senior Constable Kaye Murphy paved the way for women in the job. She was the first single Mum to work in Victoria Police and youngest female detective in the CIB.  

Kaye also worked in the toughest Crime Squads; the Breakers, Armed Robbery and Consorting Squads and the Homicide Squad.

"A fatal attraction"

Former Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne "Wally" Laver returns to The Crime Couch to talk about the bizarre murder of a nurse in Melbourne's eastern suburbs during 1987.

The young woman was bound, gagged and stabbed by a tradesman who'd been infatuated by her and rejected his advances. It was a case that has stayed with Wally when working in the Homicide Squad.

"The one that got away"

Adrian Donehue is a former Homicide detective with 31 years under his belt. He headed up the Major Crime Squad and retired as a Detective Superintendent. But one case has stayed with him. It's a 50 year old cold case that still remains open. The Homicide detective describes it as "one of the worst crimes I'd ever had to deal with".

It involves the brutal murders of a pregnant woman and her three children. A 1971 coronial inquest found husband and father Elmer Crawford to be the killer. Elmer Crawford was an unqualified electrician and today would more than 90 years old if he was alive. He has never been located and did a runner after the horrific crimes.

Giovanna Campana may be the first policewoman permitted to ever wear trousers on a freezing night-shift in country Victoria. But there's plenty more important achievements in her stellar career!

Giovanna was the first woman to be stationed in General Duties at Ballarat. She was also the first female Sergeant in Vic Pol's Protective Security Group and the first female Sergeant Negotiator.  Giovanna was also the first female Sergeant posted to East Timor.

”A walk in the light green”

Jim Archbold has served his country both as a police officer and in the army as a military policeman. 

He was drafted into the army and served in Vietnam. Jim was awarded the Military Medal for action in the Delta and as an Australian Unit citation for bravery in the battle for the Coral Fire Support Base in Vietnam. 

After serving his time, Jim returned home and resumed working with Victoria Police where he finished with 38 years under his belt.
